PSAC Championship
Game Box Score
California sophomore forward Kim Nowakowski
poured in a team-high 24 points, grabbed nine rebounds and
blocked four shots to earn MVP honors and lead the Vulcans
to a 63-59 triumph over Edinboro in the 2006 PSAC
Championship Game.
California's Megan Storck hit the game-tying shot on a drive
down the lane with 46 seconds left, and Lisa Gottuso hit the
game-winning free throws with :07 on the clock after
Edinboro was charged with a technical foul for calling a
time out when the Fighting Scots had none left.
The Vulcans (26-4) won their fourth PSAC Championship in the last five
years and earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA
Tournament. The win for California was its 12th
straight and was the 13th straight time the program claimed
victory over Edinboro.
Edinboro, which lost to the Vulcans twice during the regular
season, both by 13 points, would not let Cal get away in the
first half and eventually scored the last six points of the
period for a 30-24 halftime lead.
Kelly
Calderone and Rae Sherred led the early attack with 12 and
10 points, respectively, at the break.
Edinboro continued to control the game for the first five
minutes of the second half as Cal's shooting woes continued.
The Vulcans were 10-for-29 from the field in the opening
half (34.5%) and missed five of their first six shots in the
second half.
After a second consecutive layup by senior point guard
Callie Iorfido gave Edinboro a 38-31 lead with 15:40 left,
the Vulcan pressure defense on the perimeter turned into
better opportunities on offense, allowing the hosts to
gradually erase the deficit.
Three times, California cut Edinboro's lead to one point
before finally taking the lead (43-42) on the
second-straight inside hoop by Nowakowski with 11:17 left.
It was the first time Cal had the lead since the 6:17 mark
of the first half.
The teams traded the lead six times and had the game tied
four times down the stretch. Megan Storck's layup with 46 seconds
remaining evened the score at 59. A missed three-point
attempt by Calderone as the shot clock ran down, gave the
Vulcans the ball with 14 seconds left.
A Cal turnover gave Edinboro possession, but the timeout
call as players from both teams scrambled to take control
call led to California's game-winning free throws.
After Guttoso connected on both of her attempts, Bre Dillon added two more free throws
following the ensuing inbounds play to give the Vulcans the four-point margin of victory.
Storck posted a double-double with 10
points and a game and season-high 12 rebounds while Gottuso
added 12 scores for the winners.
Edinboro (21-9), which
finished the regular season third in the PSAC West and was
ranked ninth in the region heading into the PSAC playoffs,
was led by Calderone, who drained three long-range
shots on the way to a game-high 27 points.
Sherred scored all 10 of her points in the first half, while forward Agnes Michalow added eight points and a team-high
nine rebounds.
